Effective Resume Writing for Nurses

Nursing is a highly-competitive field where tens of thousands of nurses are constantly competing for jobs. There are presently hundreds of health care organizations across the country seeking skilled nurses for vacant positions, so you would think that merely applying for a job would be enough to get it. To cut the long story short, in order to be competitive as a nurse, you need to submit a well-written resume.
This is your one and only chance to “wow” a recruiter and land an interview. A resume must clearly convey your qualifications and strengths in a way that catches the recruiter/hiring manager’s eye. It is your main opportunity to match your skill set to the vacant positions or job description. A well-written resume creates a path forward for every possible job opportunity that matches your credentials and skills. To help you write an effective resume, we’ve provided some tips below. We believe that they will not only help you get an interview but also lay the foundation to land that job.

  1. Effective Resume Writing: An effective resume makes it fast and easy for the recruiters to locate your resume in their database. To be considered, the resume must be easy to read and match the terminologies found in the job description. This is because HR professionals are great at putting square pegs in square holes. On the average, an employer will only spend 25 seconds reviewing your resume. If you haven’t set the hook by using certain key words from the job description, you’re not going to be considered. Chances are that they will reject your application and move on to the next applicant. So it’s no brainer that the goal of resume writing is to make it easy for companies to find you, grant you that interview, and then give you the job. At the very least, your resume should include the following:
    • Heading: Include your name, address, and phone number as well as your email address at the top portion of your resume.
    • Objective: Identify the reason why you are applying for that particular position before writing your resume. Make sure that the information included in your resume is in sync with your objective.
    • Education: Identify your educational criteria (degree, school, graduation date, major, GPA, and other relevant information).
    • Course Listings: Include courses that are relevant to your position or are in line with the job description. Make it a short list to make a lasting impression.
    • Skills: Be specific with your skills.
    • Experience: Include your most relevant experiences because they demonstrate to an employer that you possess the skills necessary for the job.
    • Formatting: Make sure you use industry standard formatting found in programs such as Microsoft Word. It’s important not to forget the heading, too.

Optimize Your Resume for Applicant Tracking System (ATS): In addition to how you can improve your resume, you need to find out if the organization you are applying to uses resume tracking software such as the Application Tracking System (ATS). ATS is actually a resume database that allows faster and more accurate matching of position descriptions and applicant resumes. So, it is extremely important to create an ATS-friendly resume that will guarantee you a greater chance of being selected.Written below are some hints on how to make an ATS-optimized resume:
    • Do not use resume templates. Instead, stick to the usual Word Document format. Also, save the document in .doc format.
    • Avoid using symbols, footers, headers, borders and lines.

    • Review your resume at least three times to minimize typographical errors and gramma3tical errors.

For example, instead of “Administered patient’s medication” write “Administered 12 patient medications per hour.” It is a far more effective statement as the employer can clearly comprehend how effective and efficient you were at your previous job.
  3. Prioritize Your Resume Content: Avoid using a one-size-fits-all resume in your job applications. Each resume should be tailored to match the specifics of the position you are applying for. In other words, a well-written resume includes information that matches the job description. Remember, customizing your resume doesn’t mean changing each part of the resume. Sometimes, all you need to do is customize your objective statement and make it relevant to the sought-after position. Also, include a statement that conveys how you intend to perform once you get that position. Make sure that your statement is specific and that it conveys your level of confidence to the hiring manager.Besides, ensure that your thoughts are well organized and easily understood. Remember that the length of your resume should be one or two pages depending on your experience and the requirements of the employer. Please choose your words carefully as you may never get a second chance to make a first impression. Avoid the use of repetitive phrases and non-specific verbiage, which will detract your employers from your message. Whatever your level of writing proficiency, it is important to make diligent effort to write a solid resume. Remember, you can always seek help from friends or hire a professional who can create the perfect resume for you.
  4. Write an Effective Cover Letter: A good cover letter creates the desire to read your resume in just two paragraphs. In your resume, explain why you’re qualified and the reasons why they should select you for the position. Make sure that your cover letter is unique and try to avoid any verbiage in your resume.Lastly, there is only one inviolable rule of resume writing. Don’t lie when you are listing your achievements. Hiring managers can forgive many things, but not lying. Lying forever removes an employer’s ability to hire you even if they think you’re the perfect candidate for the job.
